There has been a lot of talk this week about what it means for a car to be truly “Jalop”. I have enjoyed each discussion on the matter, but it has also raised a question. What makes a car Oppo?. Is it just the same thing with less people making nasty comments?

Ironically, the most prevalent Oppo car is the Chevy Cruze with the automatic transmission, or no car at all.

It’s not the car, it’s how you feel about your car. My ‘05 Focus is nothing special, but I’ve fixed the rust, (very minor), maintain it, and apperciate and enjoy driving it.

What makes a car Oppo is simple. Can your car even oppo?

The Miata can. The FiST cannot.

Therefore one is oppo, the other is not.

Ah...while that is perfectly correct, I was thinking more a long the lines of the same types of qualifications as there are for being “Jalop” I’ve been “oppo” as its being described here, with every vehicle that I have ever owned!

It’s more the connection between the car and owner. To most on here, a lifted SUV isn’t very Jalop, but to me it’s just as Jalop as a Miata. I enjoy my SUV because I prefer unpaved surfaces when it comes to enthusiast use of my vehicle. While it might beat me half to death on the daily commute, it’s totally worth it when I get a chance to abuse it.

Yeah, your Yota’s definitely Jalop. Jalop is all about the character of the car and the ownership experience. In order for a car to be Jalop, it really needs to change with its owner.

You can definitely oppo a FWD car, provided it isn’t setup to understeer as most cars are, regardless of drive wheels (although it’s much easier to induce oversteer in an RWD car). A FiST or FoST will do it as they come from the factory.

I thought it was the Sonic, at least among new cars. Kind of depressing to think about, honestly. Volvos, VWs, Saabs, and Subarus seem to have a stronger following here than they do elsewhere.

Well, yeah I guess you can induce it for a few seconds. But you can’t control it and maintain it afterwards. In a RWD car, your oppo is coming from powering over. Fail wheel drive is just imitating oppo with momentum. Once that swinging momentum is gone, fun’s over.

Drifting and doing an opposite lock turn are totally different things. I never said you could maintain a drift in a FWD.

An oppo car is a car not just that drives fast, or is razor sharp, or built by the likes of Horacio Pagani or Koeniggeseggegegeg.

A jalop car is a car that is what you make one car be. Most cars here aren’t E30 318is track cars, or E39 M5’s, or W211 E63AMG’s. most of the cars here are your general daily cars. And they’re all special because their owners have channeled their heart and soul in to them, and borough out the best in their previously mentioned mix of aspects.

Be it a Miata, a FiST, a W123 Diesel or an old Cheyenne, each of these can be as jalop s the next, when owned by one of us
